GUS DUDGEON FOUNDATION + JAMES SUMMER COURSE 2019
The Gus Dudgeon Foundation and JAMES are extremely pleased to confirm that their Post Graduate Summer Course will once again run in 2019. This year, bigger and better, with two individual weeks running at two universities!
The first beginning on 7 July at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge and the second on 29 July at University of South Wales where the students will actually be using Gus’ restored MCI console.
Working with industry professionals, this course offers selected students from JAMES accredited university courses the opportunity to experience the recording and mixing process in a real-life situation.

The Producer
SIMON GOGERLY
Simon is a Grammy Award winning music mixer and producer with 33 years of top level experience, multiple UK and international silver, gold and platinum sales awards and his own recording and mixing facility, Hub 2. Since 2015 he has been teaching music technology at degree and masters level and is a senior lecturer/practitioner at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge.
Simon has worked with some of the world’s most successful and respected artists and producers including New Order, U2, Soul II Soul, No Doubt, Gwen Stefani, Paloma Faith, Gang Of Four, Underworld, Nellee Hooper, Sly & Robbie and Stephen Hague. He also has extensive experience of touring live shows both as a musician (with Dead Or Alive) and as a programmer (with New Order).
In the last few years he has also worked extensively with Danny Boyle and Underworld on several film, TV and theatre projects and the London 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony. Since opening Hub 2 Simon has produced and mixed several development artists.
During the week’s course, Simon anticipates involving student string and brass players to provide arrangements and overdubs.

The Band
PINK LEMONADE
Whole lotta pop, whole lotta punk and even more mascara! When three Norfolk girls met at Anglia Ruskin University, all female pop-punk power trio Pink Lemonade was born.
Sisters Maddie and Frankie met guitarist Rhiannon at the start of their undergraduate degrees. By February 2018, the girls realised they shared a passion for performing and started songwriting and rehearsing together. The three promptly recorded some demo tracks in the university facilities and began gigging in Cambridge by the end of March.
Drawing influences from iconic female artists such as Avril Lavigne, Pink Lemonade have created their unique sound by exploring the close vocal harmonies heard in popular music paired with raunchy overdriven guitar riffs, punchy bass grooves and steady rock drum beats.

The Course
DAY 1-
The Gus Dudgeon Foundation/JAMES Summer School at Anglia Ruskin University started off with a long, busy day recording drums and guide guitars on the three EP tracks.
After introducing the ARU studios to the participants, the session started with drum tuning and mic selections/placements, including the use of classic Coles overheads. By the end of the day, all the drum tracks were captured and editing had begun!
DAY 2-
Three simultaneous drum editing sessions followed by bass recording and guitar overdubs. The summer school participants are running an efficient production line in preparation for tomorrow’s brass session!
DAY 3-
Brass section overdubs: trumpet and sax. Guitar and vocal recording in separate studios with songs being swapped when complete. Feverish editing in any remaining rooms! The participants are certainly learning how to multi-task and work fast!!
Day 4
More, more, more… bass reamping, editing, guitar recording, discussing file management, timing edits, vocal recording…
DAY 5-
Woo hoo, after a demanding week, we're all winners! On the last day of the Gus Dudgeon Foundation/JAMES Summer Course at Anglia Ruskin University all the students received a copy of Steinberg Cubase LE.
A special prize of Steinberg's Wavelab Pro 9.5 was awarded to Barny Cutter (pictured right below) from Anglia Ruskin and a Sonnox Elite Collection of Oxford Plug-ins to Phil Shacklady (pictured left below) from Leeds Beckett. Well done all and huge thanks to Steinberg and Sonnox for the prizes.
And a special thanks must go to Tim Ireland (CEO) and Chris Allen (Business Development Manager Pro) from PMC who not only leant a pair of result6 nearfield monitors for use during the week's course, but also gave a presentation on the history and technical development of PMC.
